About Hangzhou

Hangzhou is a modern megacity with thousands of years of history and culture, in which natural landscape and human civilization are perfectly and harmoniously combined. Three World Cultural Heritages are located at Hangzhou: the West Lake, the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, and the Liangzhu ancient city relics.

Located on the southeast coast of China, lower reaches of Qiantang River and the south end of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, Hangzhou is of subtropical monsoon climate with mild and humid weather and distinctive four seasons. The average temperature during June is about 21-29 ℃ with average precipitation of 211 mm.

Hangzhou is the National Ecology Garden City and the International Awards For Liveable Communities with 66.85% forest coverage and 51.36% wetland protection rate.

Benefited from the most friendly business environment and rapidly developing information technology, private economy and digital industry are booming in Hangzhou, such as sharing economy, mobile payment, the Internet of Things(loT), etc. --so called Smart City.

Hangzhou is a famous scenic tourist city with deep historical and cultural foundation. Back in the 13th century, Marco Polo (an Italian traveler) praised Hangzhou as "the most beautiful and magnificent city in the world". You can enjoy splendid sceneries and cultural heritages of old-line water towns in south of Yangzi River.

Places of Historic Interest and Scenic Beauty

West Lake

It is an outstanding model of cultural landscape, which clearly showed the aesthetics of Chinese landscape and had a far-reaching impact on landscape design in China and even the world. It is a famous cultural lake with the longest history and the greatest influence in China, which once had a wide impact on the East Asian culture from 9th to 18th century, acclaimed as the Famous Lake of Oriental Culture.

The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal

It is the earliest (built from 486 B.C.) and the longest (1797km) man made canal in the world. The Hangzhou section of the canal has abundant historical sites and unique cultural heritages.

The Liangzhu Ancient City Relics

Liangzhu culture belongs to the archaeological culture of the late Neolithic age, developed from 5300 to 4300 years ago, demonstrated the high achievements of rice farming development in prehistoric society in China's Yangtze River Basin. Peripheral water conservancy system of Liangzhu ancient city is the earliest large-scale water conservancy project in China and the earliest dam in the world.

Xixi National Wetland Park

Located in the west outskirts of Hangzhou, it is the first and the only park integrated urban wetland, agricultural wetland, and cultural wetland in China, awarded the title of National 5A Tourist Attraction. About 70% of the area is waters, and the land’s green coverage is more than 85%. There is a paradise for birds and flowers.

Qiandao Lake

Qiandao Lake is a man-made lake located in Chun'an County, Zhejiang, China, formed since the completion of the Xin'an River hydroelectric station. There are 1,078 large islands in the lake and a few thousand smaller ones. It covers an area of 573 km² and has a storage capacity of 17.8 km³. The total area of the islands in the lake is about 86 km².

The lake is an important tourist attraction of Zhejiang. Qiandao Lake is known for its clear, and sometimes drinkable water, such as that used to produce the renowned Nongfu Spring brand of mineral water. It is also home to lush forestation (over 90%), and exotic islands, its more popular attractions include Bird Island, Snake Island, Monkey Island, Lock Island (featuring supposedly the world's biggest lock), and Island to Remind You of Your Childhood.

Lingyin Temple

Lingyin Temple is located in the northwest side of West Lake in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. It is a famous ancient temple in the south of the Yangtze River. The temple was built in 326 A.D. and has a history of over 1,600 years. Legend has it that an Indian monk named Huili came to Hangzhou and was deeply attracted by the beautiful mountainous scenery. He thought there lived immortals and then he built a temple and named it “Lingyin”,which means hidden souls. It is said that the famous monk Jigong also took vows in the temple, which made Lingyin Temple even more famous.

Leifeng Pagoda

Historical records state that the earliest construction of Leifeng Pagoda took place during the Zhiping period of the Northern Song Dynasty (1067-1085 AD), initially as a wooden structure. The name "Leifeng" originates from the Leifeng Shrine mentioned in Buddhist scriptures. After enduring centuries of tumultuous events, the pagoda collapsed in 1924. However, to restore the historical landscape of West Lake, it was reconstructed and reinstated in 2002. Recognized as one of the 'Ten Scenes of West Lake,' "Leifeng in the Sunset" indeed forms the soul of Hangzhou's natural landscape. Each evening, as the sun approaches the horizon, its golden glow bathes Leifeng Pagoda, offering in itself a mesmerizing view that would touch the depths of your soul.

Local Museums

There are more than 57 museums and memorial halls in Hangzhou, containing 13 state-level, and many of them are historical relics.

China National Silk Museum

The largest silk thematic museum in the world。 9.00 am - 4.00 pm Tuesday to Sunday (closed on Monday)

China National Tea Museum

Experience making tea by yourself。9.00 am - 5.00 pm May 1 to October 7,8.30 am - 4.30 pm October 8 to April 30 of the following year (closed on Monday; public holidays open as usual)

Zhejiang Provincial Museum

lt is one of the oldest museums in China (founded in 1929), and the only comprehensive museum in Zhejiang with morethan 100000 collections, containing cultural relics and remains jadewares, lacquerware, calligraphy, painting,etc。9.00 am - 5.00 pm Tuesday to Sunday (closed on Monday)

Hangzhou Arts and Crafts Museum

It includes 4 different theme branches: Artsand Crafts (sculpture, ceramics, silk weaving), Knife and Sword , Fan Umbrella (the only fan museum in China, and one of the world's only two fan-themed museums (the other is in London, UK))。9.00 am - 4.00 pm Tuesday to Sunday (closed on Monday)

Zhu Bingren Bronze Art Museum

It is the only pure copper-made residential building in the world, which was wholly handmade by Zhu Bingren and Zhu Junmin--the former is a representative inheritor of national intangible cultural heritage of bronze carving technology。9.00 am - 4.00 pm all year round

Chinese Hangzhou Cuisine Museum

It exhibits the inheritance and development of Hangzhou cuisine in different periods, such as Qin Dynasty, the Northern and Southern Dynasties. Classic special dishes can be tasted in the restaurants。10.00 am - 6.00 pm Tuesday to Sunday (closed on Monday)

Local Classic Flavor

Lou Wai Lou Restaurant

Located on the south of the West Lake, the restaurant was named after a poem by Lin Sheng--a poet of the Southern Song Dynasty. It is famous for its traditional dishes and enjoys great popularity among numerous celebrities both in China and abroad.
Special dishes: Song Sao fish soup , Stir-Fried Beancurd Rolls Stuffed with Minced Tenderloin, West Lake fish with vinegar gravy, Dongpo braised pork, etc.

Zhi Wei Guan Restaurant

“If you want to know my taste, you will know it by looking at the materials”.
Special dishes: Stir-Fried Beancurd Rolls Stuffed with glutinous rice, small steamed meat-filled buns, cat-ear-like noodle, etc.

Kui Yuan Noodle Restaurant

Lingyin Temple was built in 328AD during the Eastern Jin Dynasty and became one of the most significant and wealthiest Buddhist temples in the country. The visit is combined with a visit to Feilai Feng which has many engraved images of Buddha.

Liuhe Pagoda lies on the north bank of the Qiantang River in the south of the city. Built in 970 AD in the Northern Song Dynasty to suppress the roaring river waves, the pagoda's name means Harmonies of the Heaven, Earth, East, West, South and North. Climb to the top of this brick and wooden structure to enjoy the view of the Qiantang River.

The West Lake is the symbol of Hangzhou city. Besides seeing ancient stone bridges and weeping willows, you can also visit Three Pools Mirroring the Moon on Fairy Island.

You can visit Meijiawu Tea Plantation to see the growing and production of many categories of the tea and have a cup of Longjing Tea which is well known in China.

Hangzhou is a city of much natural beauty. The West Lake is a grand example as the shining gem in the area. The lake has many bridges, pagodas, and walkways to complete the atmosphere of a classical Chinese natural area.

The Hu Qingyu Hall Chinese Traditional Herbal Medicine Museum to learn about what you may know of Western medicine against the theories and practices of Eastern medicine. Its many carefully maintained exhibition halls explore the origins, development, and application of traditional Chinese medicine and its role in the world history of medicine.

The ancient town of Wuzhen will yield a delightful time for all ages. It is in the north of the city of Tongxiang, with an hour's drive from Hangzhou. Wuzhen's endless canals weave through the town passing sights such as Fanglu Pavilion and the former residence of Mao Dun. Visiting Wuzhen, you can take on a wooden boat cruise for a picturesque journey through living history.

Shanghai and Suzhou are two of China's most picturesque cities.

You can find out the secret of Shanghai's progression by taking an in-depth Bund exploration and enjoy a nice panoramic view from the Shanghai World Financial Center to see the coexist of classical and modernist style architectures along the Bund.

Yuyuan Garden, which was built in the 16th century. It is like a peaceful oasis, hidden in the bustling metropolis. When walking in the garden, you will learn the meanings of its design and decoration.

The Humble Administrator's Garden is the biggest classic Chinese garden in Suzhou and was built in 1509 during the Ming Dynasty. The focus is on water surrounded by numerous elegant pavilions, towers and tranquil walkways. Unique aspects of building are provided by the different windows and doors giving different angles from which to see the same landscape. The Grand Canal is the longest man-made waterway in the world.

Nanxun Water Town is the most original and unique of such towns. It is full of life and culture, and less commercial than other water towns. There will be a wedding performance on the water, showing you how a traditional Chinese wedding was conducted in the water town.
